Lester Kanis, CPA, Principal

Lester Kanis has more than 35 years of audit, accounting, tax and business advisory service experience. Les has significant experience serving clients in diverse industries such as government, real estate, nonprofit and healthcare. For the government services practice, he ensures resources and services are appropriately deployed and allocated to the firm’s federal, state and local clients.

Federal agency clients include the Department of Housing and Urban Development; as well as the Department of Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Minerals Management Service, and Office of Historical Trust Accounting. Les is also the Co-Managing Director of two joint venture outsourced Section 8 contract administration services to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, as a subcontractor to Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA) and Michigan State Housing Development Agency (MSHDA), respectively. In addition, he has provided services to public and private syndications, as well as public funds.

Les has been involved in providing HUD audit, cost certification and financial analyses for clients who own and/or manage properties financed and/or subsidized under virtually every HUD housing program. He participated in the Asset Management and Annual Financial Statement Task Forces of the HUD 2020 Reorganization, and has lectured at various state societies or associations regarding compliance with HUD guidelines and other audit and accounting and tax issues. He actively participates in HUD’s Focus Group meetings for performance-based contract administration. He has consulted with the AICPA regarding HUD Audit Guide IG 2000.4.
