Interview Resource Center

A strong resume and a successful interview will help you land the job you want. Here are a few helpful tips to assist you:

  • Spell check, proofread and have someone else review your resume. Poor grammar and typos can do you in before you even have a chance to interview.
  • Practice makes perfect. Review common interview questions and practice answering them out loud.
  • Research the firm. Know as much as you can about the firm you are interviewing with and what they do.
  • Dress to impress. Suits, ties, belts, the whole nine yards. No crazy jewelry or loud colors. Keep it neutral and let the interviewer remember you for you, not your leopard print shoes.
  • Ask questions. This is where that research you did will come in handy. Come prepared with questions to ask your interviewer.
  • Send a thank you e-mail immediately. Most campus hiring decisions are made quickly after the interviews. Make sure they get the thank you before they make their decisions (and refer to bullet point one regarding spelling and typos).

Tips to calm your nerves:

  • Eat breakfast so your stomach doesn't talk more than you will.
  • Get a good night's sleep before the interview.
  • Give yourself plenty of time to get there. Running late will only increase your anxiety. On the flip side, don't be more than 20 minutes early.
  • Take a breath before you answer each question. This will give you a chance to collect your thoughts and not trip over your words.
  • Make eye contact, smile and try not to fidget.
